Those coming from Iowa have to cross the Missouri River into Nebraska. Local trivia: those coming to Eppley from downtown Omaha actually have to cross through Iowa via the small slice of Abbott Drive signed as Iowa Highway 165. So, perhaps the proportions are just about right.
Then again, Hawk Field is designed for unmanned, radio-controlled planes, and Eppley Airfield handles big, people-moving jets.
Hawk Field, Omaha’s other airport, only has one runway. In fact, Eppley Airfield boasts six beautiful runways, making it the largest airport in Nebraska. The Airfield serves not only Omaha and Council Bluffs, but also eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, northern Kansas, northwest Missouri, and even southern South Dakota. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines dominate the airport, accounting for nearly 50% of the almost 400 flights Eppley handles per week. While certainly not as large as JFK, LAX, or O’Hare, Eppley Airfield offers service to popular stops across the country. Today, almost 4.5 million passengers pass through Eppley each year. Prior to being called Eppley Airfield, wee Omaha Municipal Airport was converted into a modern jet port in 1959-60, following a $1 million donation from the estate of Omaha hotel magnate Eugene C.
